Nintendo Is Making An App Store For Wii U

It looks like Nintendo is taking the kid gloves off when it comes to apps and entertainment. According to The Daily, the Wii U will feature a fully-loaded app store, as opposed to the current app stores on Wii's Virtual Console or the 3DS' E-Shop. Non-gaming apps on these platforms have mostly been limited to basic utilities like weather-reporting and calculator programs.
The Wii-U, on the other hand, will have entertainment capabilities more in line with what gamers have come to expect from Xbox Live and Playstation Network. Some apps, such as MLB.TV, are meant to be watched on TV, while others will utilize the Wii U's special tablet controller.
There is currently no word as to what types of apps will make use of the tablet, but it would be fair to guess that social networking apps like Facebook and Twitter would make a lot more sense with a digital keyboard.
Nintendo did not specify whether the Wii U app store would use a points-based system similar to what they've used in the past or if they'll be switching to a dollar-based system.

'Myst' Coming to 3DS

Since the original "Myst" came out in 1993, it's become one of the most iconic computer games of all time, earning a prominent place in the personal gaming history books along with "Doom" and "Civilization." It was a simple game that had players solve intricate puzzles throughout a handful of impressive, thematic worlds. The game spawned four sequels, three books, a massively multiplayer online game, and helped popularize the point-and-click adventure genre.

Maximum Family Games announced in a press release that it would release "Myst 3D" for the Nintendo DS -- another remake of the classic PC game. But in 3D. G4 reports it will be based on the 2000 remake, "realMyst," which had one extra world and updated graphics. It's currently scheduled for a March 27, 2012 release date.

Last minute Christmas deals on the Nintendo 3DS

Meijer is giving away a $30 gift card with every Nintendo 3DS bought this week.  The 3DS is priced regularly at $169.99.  Considering Meijer also recently issued a round of Santa Bucks coupons, the smart gaming shopper might want to see if they can sneak a coupon in on the same invoice for extra savings.
The $30 gift card rebate isn't quite as good as Best Buy's $50 gift card deal on the Nintendo 3DS from earlier this month.  For good measure, Best Buy is matching Meijer's 3DS deal this week.

The Oregon Trail(R) Blazes Its Way Onto Wii(TM) and Nintendo 3DS(TM) Platforms

This new iteration of The Learning Company's classic educational action adventure game will be available for a SRP of $19.99 (Wii) and $29.99 (3DS) wherever Wii and Nintendo 3DS games are sold. The Oregon Trail is rated E-10+.
Set in the mid-1800s, The Oregon Trail lets players assume the role of a wagon pioneer leader guiding a party of settlers westward across 2,000 miles of winding, rough terrain from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon City on the Oregon Trail. The classic game has now been modernized for all ages on Wii(TM) and Nintendo 3DS(TM) and is part of the frenzy of nostalgia over the game, which has yielded everything from band tour promotions ("Fall Out Boy Trail") to humorous references on popular websites ("Digg has broken an axle"). Since 1971, more than 65 million copies of the highly popular game have been sold.
The single-player game retraces the historical journey, challenging the gamer to survive and prosper through four unique storylines with three different time periods. Plan and stock up for the dangerous trip, complete a variety of timed challenges including hunting and fishing, and unlock special items along the way. The Oregon Trail on Wii and Nintendo 3DS is the first version of the game where players can drive the wagon on the trail.
"The Oregon Trail has remained popular for 40 years because it's the perfect blend of a solid educational experience and compelling, interactive game play," said Richard Corredera, director business affairs at game developer DoubleTap Games. "With our new edition for Wii and Nintendo 3DS, we've updated and modernized the experience to keep the game fresh, exciting, and endlessly entertaining. Hunting, fishing and surviving on a wagon has never been this fun."

Q&A: Shigeru Miyamoto Looks Into Nintendo’s Future

Image: David Cheung/Wired
The full interview with Miyamoto follows.

Q&A: Shigeru Miyamoto Looks Into Nintendo’s Future

The creator of Super Mario Bros. has big plans for Nintendo’s future … and very small plans for his own.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the head of Nintendo’s game design efforts, sat down with Wired last week to discuss how the company plans to win more fans to its Nintendo 3DS handheld, the remarkable collaboration between developers in Kyoto and Texas that created Mario Kart 7, and another blockbuster franchise that he thinks would be a good fit for East-West cooperation.
But it was Miyamoto’s final comments from this interview, which took place at Nintendo’s Redwood City offices last Wednesday, that caused a stir when we previewed this interview last week. The veteran designer and head of Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development said that he would be stepping back from his current direct involvement with the company’s massive franchise titles to concentrate on smaller, more personal projects, beginning next year.
Nintendo of America sought to put that disclosure in perspective, emphasizing in a statement that Miyamoto is not leaving the company. “He jokingly mentions retirement to motivate his staff to excel,” the company said. “His ability to focus on smaller projects reflects the confidence he has in all of Nintendo’s development teams … Mr. Miyamoto will continue to provide oversight to those teams and get deeply involved in projects when the situation warrants, ensuring that the quality of Nintendo projects is maintained at a high level. But he will also be able to explore new innovations on his own and in smaller design groups.”

Japan Is Leading The Market Of virtual Companions with their nintendo DS Dating Game

Yuuya Iwama is a young Japanese man who enjoy taking his girlfriend Manaka Takane on dates around Tokyo. What makes Manaka special, is that she’s a virtual character found on the dating game Love Plus, which is available on the Nintendo DS portable gaming console. However, just like a real relationship, Iwama can converse with Manaka, reply to her e-mails and go on romantic dates. Love Plus includes over 5,000 scripts, 150 CG events and over 25,000 voice expressions. The game is set in real-time and essentially can be played 24 hours a day for a lifetime. The game only ends when the relationship falters.
Iwama has been ‘dating’ Manaka for over a year and explains that, “She feels as real as my real girlfriend. She is very cute but the most attractive feature is how difficult it is. I have to reply to e-mails. She gets upset if I’m late for dates.”

Love Plus was created by Akari Uchida, who believes that having sentiments for a virtual game character is no stranger than having feelings for characters in novels or TV dramas. At this stage, he has no plans to release Love Plus in English

Nyko Power Grip for Nintendo 3DS review

Design
The Power Grip is a hard black plastic clip-on case that weighs 3.2 ounces and adds just 0.4 inches to the half-pound, 0.9-inch-thick (closed) 3DS. A plastic edge wraps around the left, right, and bottom edge of the 3DS' lower half, and two clips on the top side hold it in place. One clip is larger to keep the electrical connection aligned, with two wires that push out to contact the 3DS' charging points when it's placed on. A rubber door on the back side of the larger clip covers the charging port, which works with the same cable that comes with the 3DS cradle.
Cut-outs on the bottom and sides provide access to the headphone jack, the power lights, and the volume and 3D sliders, and the card slot on the top is unobstructed by the grip. A small light under the power light cut-outs show whether the grip is powered, and flashes red when it's running out of juice. Finally, two L-shaped notches, one on each side of the bottom of the grip, provide a comfortable place to rest your middle fingers while leaving your index fingers free to press the shoulder buttons. The notches make the 3DS much easier to grip then the handheld's own smooth, flat back.
Performance
When it's on, the grip charges the 3DS, keeping the battery full and making the device think it's plugged in. When the battery in the grip runs down, the 3DS stops charging and runs off of its own internal battery. This offers much more flexibility than the Nyko Charge Base, which requires you to unscrew and remove the 3DS' rear plate (which contains the device's serial number) and attach the battery pack permanently to the system. Unfortunately, it means you can't charge the 3DS with the grip on a cradle. You need to charge the Power Grip by directly plugging it into the 3DS power cable.
In my tests, the Power Grip lasted for four hours and twenty minutes with the 3DS' screen at full brightness, and with 3D and Wi-Fi on, before the power light on the battery started flashing. When I took the Power Grip off the 3DS, it left the handheld with a full charge.
The Nyko Power Grip for Nintendo 3DS is an even-better solution than the Nyko Charge Base. It's temporary, easy to use, long-lasting, and comfortable to hold. Its only drawback is that you can't use a charging cradle when you use it. If you want to add a few hours to your 3DS play time, this is a cheap and easy way to do it.

Shigeru Miyamoto Isn’t Retiring Says Nintendo

Wired reported that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current role at Nintendo and would from here on out only pursue smaller projects. As it turns out though, this is incorrect. Here’s a new statement from Nintendo:

N.O.A. XENOBLADE CHRONICLES COMING TO NINTENDO'S WII CONSOLE IN SPRING

It's man vs. machine in a new game coming to Nintendo's Wii™ console in spring. Xenoblade Chronicles™ asks players to use the Monado blade to take on a seemingly endless series of invading Mechon robots in a sweeping role-playing adventure.

The main character is Shulk, a weapons researcher who must confront the Mechon by wielding the ancient Monado blade. It's the only weapon that has any effect against the Mechon, and it also enables Shulk to see the future.

Players can customize their characters with a variety of weapons and armor choices, as well as headgear, boots and gloves. As in many role-playing games, players can then gain experience and upgrade their characters. Players can watch their enemies, learn their tactics and unleash real-time counterattacks.

The vast open world of Xenoblade Chronicles is ripe for exploration. Players can avert their focus from the main story and venture out looking for other challenges and side quests. Hidden areas and unique monsters are scattered throughout the game's massive world, which players can explore freely.

Xenoblade Chronicles has already launched in Japan and Europe, and has received unanimously positive reviews, including several perfect scores.

Xenoblade Chronicles will be available exclusively through U.S. GameStop retail locations, http://www.gamestop.com/ and http://www.nintendo.com/ at a suggested retail price of $49.99 in the United States.
