Rumor: Next 3DS firmware update to include Nintendo Network

Back in January, Nintendo announced that they were working on the Nintendo Network, a successor to the system currently utilized by Nintendo systems that uses lengthy friend codes in order to connect with other people, and doesn’t allow for more important network functions like patch releases. The Nintendo Network would serve as a system in the same vein as the PSN or Xbox Live, giving players static profiles that work across the various Nintendo platforms and facilitating downloads of DLC, full games, and patches.
These details, still unconfirmed, are as follows:
  • Ability to access Nintendo eShop account from other internet enabled devices including computers and smartphones.
  • This system update will allow users to take pictures of QR codes with the 3DS from the other device’s screen to redeem purchased content.
  • This update will add the application “Nintendo Network” to the 3DS.
  • Ability to update physical Nintendo 3DS Games via Nintendo Shop (DLC feature).
  • A “Game Preview” Mode for the Nintendo 3DS system Nintendo Shop.
  • Enhances the speed of the handheld.
  • Increases the system security with automatic security updates.
  • Nintendo Zone will be automatically added to European 3DS owners.
If this rumor is actually verified, then 3DS owners have a lot to look forward to. With the Nintendo Network in place, connectivity between the 3DS and Wii U would likely be extensive, and would potentially open up several new avenues of play.
